Paper mache box project & a fun day

My husband had an appointment early this morning so I invited myself over to my mom's house. That's one of the great things about my mom, you can usually invite yourself over if she is not headed somewhere. I loved on her puppies, and cat, once I found where he was hiding. They had all gone to the vet yesterday and he was taking a bit longer to recover from the shots. Kitty doesn't usually allow kisses on his nose (it messes up the fur and 'we' just can NOT have that!) but he let me kiss on him today.
Mom and I went to our favorite store... Hobby Lobby of course!
Christmas items are now 90% off. I scored these large, white tree balls for $1.20!

I decided not to crop out the other stuff in the photo so you could kind of see what's going on. That's my roller I use to paint primer onto canvases and boards. The gray thing is my glass palette painted on the back with a neutral gray paint. Doing so really makes the colors of the oil paints stand out and cleaning up a glass palette is super easy. I also use white paper palettes on occasion.

I also scored a Between the Vines decorative painting book for $2.80!

Guess what else was on sale? That's right, paper mache boxes are on sale right now for 30% off. This is what I will be using for my project. It will need to be done in a series of steps but I will continue to label each post in this manner; paper mache box project pt2, pt3, pt 4...etc. So that you can easily find them if you wish.

The first thing to do after removing the price tag from the bottom of the box is to coat it thoroughly with this...

As it is drying, trace your pattern from the book of photo you wish to use. Like this.

I am using the above pattern, but not in its original colors. I will be painting my box in something a more colorful, but I love this quiet scene. When I am done, I will have a cute little cartonnage box.
So, look for the project titles to see more of the steps as I more further along with this project.

Hi Melissa,
I too love to paint paper mache boxes and have designed so many over the years I have lost count. LOL
The pattern you chose is so pretty. I am sure yours will be gorgeous in brighter colors. I have painted many a pattern from the nearly 1000 books I have studied from over the years. Since those years, I free lance my own designs and patterns. I love Jamie Mills and have all her books too. They have been a great learning tool. Too bad we can't paint and sell her patterns right?

Have fun with your painted box. Look forward to seeing it when finished.
Have fun, XO CM
p.s. best wishes in the new year!!
